Landfill

Landfill operators have a duty of care to design, construct, operate and decommission their sites in such a way as to protect the surrounding environment from the potential hazards associated with landfill management.

Key to the success of this is controlling the landfill gases and leachate generated within the waste itself. Equally important is the need to manage rainwater infiltration into completed cells and also to protect the local groundwater.

Typical applications

  • Landfill capping
  • Landfill sideslope lining
  • Contaminated land remediation
  • Capillary break layers
  • Slope stabilisation
  • Mine tailings dams
  • Landfill basal lining
  • Dewatering ponds
  • Minewater treatment
  • Ash disposal
  • Leak detection

Benefits

  • Create more landfill volume
  • Reduced excavation and backfill
  • Fast and easy installation
  • Factory consistent performance
  • Defined filtration performance
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Protection for geomembrane liners
  • Massively reduced traffic volumes compared to using drainage stone

Drainage geocomposites are at the forefront of gas, leachate and groundwater management systems in landfill lining and capping systems worldwide

Geotexan are at the forefront of providing value engineered geosynthetic solutions for capping drainage and erosion control, slope veneer stabilisation, gas collection, leachate drainage, leakage detection and groundwater management in the landfill sector worldwide.

Geosynthetics in Landfill Applications

Landfill Cap Drainage
The Drenflex Waterproof drainage geocomposite for landfill capping systems prevents the saturation of the cover soils by collecting and draining away rainwater. This ensures the capping soil remains stable and also acts as a protective layer for the capping geomembrane.

Gas Collection & Dispersal
Wide width, pre-formed, gas venting layers are installed beneath a landfill capping geomembrane or geosynthetic clay liner to form a free flowing void across the capped area. This highly-efficient gas collection system also acts as a protective layer for the capping geomembrane.

Geomembrane Protection
Our range of geotextiles provide protection, filtration and separation in a single geotextile. The high CBR puncture resistance of Geotesan NT textiles protects geomembrane liners from sharp materials found in the waste and angular stone that has been used in the construction of the landfill cell.

Drainage and gas collection geocomposites can be custom manufactured to include protection geotextiles, offering enhanced geomembrane protection without the need for an additional geotextile layer.

Landfill Basal & Side-Slope Leachate Drainage
Drenflex Triplanar collects and drains leachate whilst also protecting the geomembrane liner from puncture. The large voids spaces present in the drainage core also offer excellent resistance to biological clogging.

Landfill Basal Groundwater Drainage
Drenflex Waterproof geocomposites below the landfill basal geomembrane or geosynthetic clay liner act to manage groundwater ingress and provide protection to the lining system.

Leakage Detection
Leakdrain used between the primary and secondary geomembrane liners of a containment system not only identifies the presence of a leak, but also has sufficient drainage capacity to act as a collection layer until repairs can be made.

Landfill Soil Veneer Stabilisation
Biaxial and triaxial reinforcement geogrids installed over the lining system and anchored at the top of the slope support the weight of the overlying soils and drainage layers, reducing the chances of slipping.

Erosaweb geocells are all designed to confine and stabilise cover soils on steep slopes and can either be pinned or anchored as necessary. The honeycomb structure of the product also reduces surface water run off velocities to mitigate soil erosion.

Slope Erosion Control
Our range of Erosamat erosion control matting options are designed to protect exposed areas while vegetation establishes.

Erosamats Type 1 is a biodegradable mat that absorbs the impact energy of rain bombardment and reduces surface water run-off velocities to give newly establishing vegetation the best possible chance of survival.

Erosamat Type 3 works by providing an interlock for vegetation root systems, better enabling the vegetation to resist high shear/stress situations. It is non-biodegradable and has a design life of 120 years.

Haul Roads
Geogrids, non-woven geotextiles and Abweb geocells can all be used to reduce the construction time and materials required for haul roads and access routes across landfill sites. Our staff are able to offer cost-benefit advice on which is best suited to your project.

Design Expertise
The design and specification of component geosynthetics used in the construction of a landfill site is entirely project specific. Assistance with product selection and specification is available from our team of in house chartered civil engineers in the technical team.

It is important to protect the environment from both natural and man-made hazards as land is developed, and protecting new developments from existing hazards in the ground can be just as important.

As well as manufacturing high performance geosynthetic drainage materials, such as our Drenflex geocomposites and puncture resistant geotextiles, we provide full technical back up for the design and installation of all our products.

Water management clearly means that drainage performance is a key factor in product selection, however consideration also needs to be given to slope stability, puncture resistance, barrier layers and a whole host of other parameters to ensure the integrity of the site.
