Whenever soil is exposed, cut or formed, the risk of erosion from wind, rain or water is high. Left unprotected the result is progressive instability and large amounts of silt-laden run-off.
Erosion may occur as a result of human activity, or simply because nature needs a helping hand to re-establish vegetation. In all situations, an erosion control mat will provide immediate surface protection and will reduce erosion even before the vegetation is established. Tests have shown a reduction in sediment loss of between 70 and 100%.
Rainfall causes erosion of exposed areas in two ways; rain splash and transportation. Both are effectively stopped by an erosion mat. Firstly the mats have high surface cover to prevent the rain drops from pounding into the soil. Secondly, the fibres and threads of the mat prevent run-off water from gathering sufficient velocity to carry the soil particles.
